It takes an average of 74 days or 2-3 months for sperm to grow and mature. Ova take about can take anywhere from 90-150 days to reach final maturation. That means that 3-6 months of care and planning can greatly improve the quality of these precious resources.
But the reality, the fertility path is not just about the physical body. Taking the time to prepare on all levels for pregnancy with conscious awareness is sometimes called conscious conception. I like this approach better than the language around TTC (Trying To Conceive) for several reasons. The first is that TTC is not positive word medicine. Trying to do something isn’t necessarily achieving the end goal. Second, the choice to approach life with awareness, with consciousness, means you are bringing the dream in line with your highest self. If you do this in partnership, of course you don’t need to, but if you do, you are choosing to co- create from your most loving, grounded, present version of yourselves. No matter what tools you pick up, fertility awareness, nutrition, complementary therapies, IVF etc. . . .
This first month we work with the energy of Spring. In Chinese Medicine, Spring is the season of Wood energy. This is the energy of vibrant growth, movement and vitality. It is paired with the internal organs of the Liver and Gallbladder. Energetically, from the Chinese Medicine viewpoint, these organs are about planning, determination, creativity and expression. Physically these organs function to detox the blood, move energy and emotions around the body smoothly and play an important role in the hormone system. As we approach Spring Equinox, we enter the perfect of time of year for gentle detoxing. If you have chronic health issues, please check with your care provider before beginning a detox on your own. No matter your health- working with a health professional like a nutritional therapist or naturopathic doctor can help trouble shoot any symptoms that come up during a detox and make the whole experience much more pleasant. This is because a detox encourages toxins stored in your deep tissues and organs to be released so they can be cleared from your body. If your underlying health is low, this process can be hard on your body. Take it slow and listen to your body. Annual cleansing is something I really look forward to as a way of bringing myself into alignment. It is an opportunity to hit the internal reset button and start with a blank canvas. Giving my body this break increases my energy, my creativity and my ability to flow with ease through the day.
Physical Body Detoxing basics:
1. Eliminate toxins: This means take a break from coffee and alcohol, processed foods, sugar, conventional dairy, meat and produce (these are contaminated with pesticides and other chemicals which are known to impact your hormones and not in the good way).
2. Hydrate and Rejuvenate: Water flushes the system of toxins and light, organic meals bring energy to your body. Lots of greens, raw juices, smoothies, fresh fruits and lightly cooked vegetables all support the detoxing process.
3. Movement: The Liver loves movement. Dancing, walking, yoga, swimming- whatever you enjoy doing. Movement supports the lymph system flushing toxins out of your body.
4. Let It Go! Your skin is one of the biggest organs of your body. To support detoxing, try gentle exfoliating or dry body brushing to improve circulation and slough off dead cells and toxins from the surface of your body.
Here are a couple of my favorite detoxing recipes.
1 ounce dried nettle
1 quart mason jar with lid
1 quart boiling pure water
Place the dried herb in the jar.
Cover with hot water.
Seal and leave at least 4 hours, overnight it fine.
Sip throughout the day 4 or 5 days a week. Room temperature is fine. If the taste is too strong you can try it with a straw or sweeten with a little honey or maple syrup. Mix in 1 teaspoon of bee pollen just before drinking for the extra amino acids. (Your body needs amino acids to make hormones)
Apple Cider Vinegar & Lemon Tonic
Lemon and apple cider vinegar are both wonderful for activating the liver. Taking this tonic daily in the morning has the added benefit of promoting overall gut balance, through the vinegar’s ability to tame unfriendly intestinal bacteria and yeasts.
What You Need:
8 oz. pure water
1-2 tsp. raw apple cider vinegar
Squeeze of lemon
Honey and Cinnamon to taste
How to make and use:
Turn off heat and allow to cool to drinking temperature about 10 minutes.
Add the rest of the ingredients and mix well.
Enjoy each morning
